I met Erin for the first time this past June while shooting a wedding in Central New York (see it here) and to my excitement, I got the opportunity to work beside her again just a few weeks later when I shot a rainy, but gorgeous backyard wedding in Wynantskill (see it here). I have to admit that since then I’ve been kind of more than a little obsessed with stalking the before/after shots on her Instagram (pssst… you can find the link below). Erin has a knack for drawing out people’s natural beauty and showcasing their most eye-catching features in a way that is both dramatic and dazzling. She definitely has a style all her own.
I caught up with Erin this week to find out a little more about her background and what makes her tick, and I learned some super interesting things: Erin credits her early years in pageants as the inspiration that sparked her passion for MUA (makeup artistry), but get this… when she was just 12 years old she created her own pageant coaching/costume designs/hair/makeup business and she traveled all along the east coast with her students to pageants for 10 years! But that’s not her only claim to fame: she competed with Justin Timberlake in Tennesee before he made it big-time, and she was also a member of the Miami Dolphin Cheerleading team.
Erin is now a licensed esthetician and has owned and operated her bridal makeup company for ten years. This past summer she participated in Men’s Fashion Week and she’s excited to share that she’s been asked to parktake in Women’s New York Fashion Week this year as well. Erin is super grateful to have a career she loves and parents and friends who have always supported her 100%. She couldn’t imagine doing anything else!
Can you share your first memories of being interested in makeup artistry? Was there a moment you can recall when you realized this was what you wanted to do in life?
When I was younger I did pageants and we would travel down south. I would watch this one particular MUA “Mr. Michael” when he did my hair and makeup and I fell in love with the whole makeup process!
What do you love most about working in the wedding industry?
The excitement in the air and the process of how it all comes together.
What sets you apart from other MUA’s in the area?
I think, just as everyone does, that I have my own style of makeup, a certain look that I’ve been told you can pick out of a crowd –“that’s Erin’s makeup”– and I embrace the trends but still stay true to my own Erin Muller Makeup style.
If you could give any piece of advice to your brides what would it be?
Try to get as much stuff done in the beginning of the wedding planning as possible so you can sit back and relax and enjoy your day. The day of, don’t sweat the small stuff because no marriage is perfect, so the wedding doesn’t have to be perfect either. Moments like this don’t come around that often and you’ll never get it back so try not to stress on the big day; it’s just not worth it. Enjoy it & have fun
What inspires you?
I would say I get inspired just by getting the opportunity to work on someone because I see the beauty in them. I see the beauty; the eyes, brows, cheekbones that maybe the bride or bridesmaids don’t even notice, see or believe themselves…but I see it and it inspires me!
