I was really excited when Kris contacted me to do a maternity session for her and her husband JJ; maternity sessions are a favorite of mine – nothing beats the glow on the faces of an expecting couple.
Kris and JJ live about an hour and fifteen minutes south of Albany and when I asked if they had a location in mind for the session they didn’t skip a beat: Minnewaska State Park near New Paltz! Now, I spent my college and graduate school years at New Paltz and like to consider myself a bit of a former New Paltzonian. Any good New Paltzonian knows that a drive to Minnewaska is a must when the leaves are at their peak. I have whiled away many warm fall afternoons sitting beside Lake Minnewaska looking out at the water and I knew the location to be unbeatable.
On the day of the shoot, the sun shone brightly. After a quick stop in New Paltz for lunch at one of my old haunts, I headed toward Minnewaska to meet the couple. As I drove out of town, I noticed the way the light beat brilliantly against every tree, making the mountain look like it was on fire. This session was going to rock!
Upon their arrival, Kris and JJ were all set to get started and were excited to incorporate the props they had planned for the shoot. They’d decided to use the photos as a way to share news of their baby’s gender. One catch: they hadn’t yet learned what they were having. So out came the pink balloons, and then the blue ones. And sparkly little ballerina flats and brown suede loafers. We took turns photographing each and as we did I asked whether they had a preference for a boy or a girl. They both kindly said they didn’t mind so long as the baby was healthy. But then JJ confided that he hoped for a baby boy with whom he could do all those guy things dads dream of doing with their sons.
So do you think JJ got his wish? Scroll down and see…
